The challenges of continuous change and extraordinary complexity in cancer research, drug discovery and organization oversight and management requires an agile and flexible approach to providing an integrated, easy to use information infrastructure. The old methods of developing, implementing, and maintaining software don’t work because the process takes too long and the system deliverable typically misses the mark as user requirements are constantly changing.

BioXM Knowledge Management Environment is a powerful suite of three software modules that provide agile, flexible, rapid and ongoing implementation of changing user requirements. The BioXM Knowledge Environment uses data integration and linguistics tools to manage knowledge through finding relationships between “semantic” or “scientific” objects. Objects are user defined, flexible and tired to the underlying data model.

BioXM is configured to support diverse environments through an iterative process.

  • Develop a define a domain specific data model at a white board and use the BioXM Modeling Module to create a valid relationship map connecting objects and elements.

  • Load organization or public domain data and text sources and mapped to the data model.

  • Use the semantic query builder to provide a suite of easy to use end-user queries.

The Wiki style portal is designed for the Drug Discovery casual user who wants to query across both heterogeneous databases and large, unstructured, free text files “connect the dots” using powerful mapping algorithms. “Google” like queries provide information in rich tables.

BioXM allows the same information to be rendered in a graphic “Knowledge Network” with a click of the mouse. Scientists, doctors, administrators and executives are shown valid interconnections of details, which, in isolation, are of lesser value. The goal is to see both the depth and breadth of complex information to drive discovery, change, innovation and management decisions. New knowledge gained by the user is annotated, stored, “institutionalized” and made available to collaborative team members over extended periods of time.

With the agile, flexible BioXM Knowledge Environment, organizations find they drive change and are ahead of versus behind the innovation curve. Researchers are free to drive change with new technologies such as next generation sequencing, follow-up on new scientific findings, improve methods and approaches through the integration of heterogeneous data base and free text sources. Mergers, acquisitions, re-organizations, fluctuations in government, research centers and academic institution budgets all drive change in staffing, infrastructure and governance/policy decisions. Driving changes allows scientists to remain on the cutting edge of research and drug development.
